Alistair Hamish Gospelpipe IV is the nom de plume of a 30-something son of a hard-nosed political broker and an aerial socialite. He is a solitary soul whose manic depression is a source of shame, and prevents him from seeking out friends, paramours or a career.

Thus, he vicariously lives those experiences through his stories and the characters who populate them. 

Alistair spends most of his time in Boston, Mass. but is forced to retire to Miami, FL when the overcast New England winters wreak havoc on his nerves.

Despite being a shut-in, Alistair has been described as "handsome, but wan."
