We walked out of the store and into the bright sunlight. Reaching into my pocket for my keys, I turned to Jake and asked him whether he wanted to drive or wanted me to drive. I pulled the keys out and shook them.
The jingle caused Jake to turn his head. He reached for the keys. "I'd love to drive your BMW 330."
"What makes you think I drive a BMW?" I started to chuckle just a little.
"Well, any guy who uses the small cart to shop so that people will know he's gay..."
"That's not what I meant," I countered.
"Just saying. A guy like that's bound to drive the gayest car on the road."
"Wait a minute," I reached over and touched Jake's arm. "I thought the Subaru Outlook was the gayest car."
"Well, sure," said Jake. "If you're a lesbian."
I handed him the keys. "You're going to be disappointed. My car's the white one."
He looked around the parking lot as if my car were invisible. "I don't see it."
"It's right here." I pointed to my white Pontiac Sunbird station wagon.
"What is it?" He feigned shock. "And how do you get it open? There's no button on this key."
"Haha. You have to put the key in the slot and turn it. And, you'll have to reach over to unlock my side."
"Where's the crank so I can get it started?"
"I take it you're a stand-up comedian."
Jake got in the car and opened my door. I got in and put my seat belt on.
"I'm sorry; I shouldn't make fun of your car. I don't even have one."
I turned and looked at him. "My little Pontiac has been a great little car. It runs with no trouble; gets good gas mileage, and the A/C can freeze your nipples off."
"Good points."
"So why," I asked him, "don't you have a car?"
"I moved here from the city last month. I didn't have a car then, and I still don't. I'm staying with my sister, and I've been walking to the office." He started the car. "Well, it sounds great." He put the car in gear and started out of the parking lot.
"Where are you taking us?"
"I don't know. What are you up for?"
"If you haven't had breakfast, we can grab a bite," I suggested.
"Sure. I'd love something to eat with orange juice."
"What about a bacon and egg burrito at Taco Bell. I love them. I pretty sure they've got orange juice, but if they don't, we can stop at the 7-11, and I get you one."
"Sounds perfect." Jake reached over and squeezed my knee.
I felt a tickly feeling inside my belly. I put my hand on his. "You'll want to turn right up here on Morgan Street."
He turned at the light and the sign was instantly in view. "What do you want to drink? Are you a coffee drinker?"
"More of a milk and coffee drinker. But I usually get iced tea or a Coke when getting fast food. What about you?"
Jake took a deep breath. "I'm one of those evil people who will drink a Coke for breakfast, but I always have water or wine at dinner."
"There's nothing evil about that; it's just, uh,..." We pulled into the drive-through. "I guess the word is different."
"So you're a peacemaker then."
"You say that with a hint of sarcasm," I pinched my lips together and gave my best scowl.
Jake raised his eyebrows.
"Good morning. How may I help you today?" The intercom interrupted him.
"Saved by the voice," I laughed.
Jake made a clicking sound with his cheek and turned to the speaker. "We'll have two bacon breakfast burritos and two iced teas with light ice, and an orange juice." He turned to me. "I probably won't want all of the juice, so I'll share."
Could he be any cuter? I thought not at the time. The car moved again. Both of us reached into our pockets to pay. "I think I should pay," I told him. "I don't believe the chauffeur should have to pay for his meals." I handed him a twenty.
"If I'm the chauffeur, then you should be riding in the back." He bent forward and stared straight into my eyes.
I felt the urge to kiss him, but I knew I should wait. I wasn't sure how long I would be able to hold out. The attraction that I felt for him was getting stronger. "I'd rather be upfront with you."
The car in front of us drove off. I guess he had received his food; I hadn't noticed. My attention was elsewhere. Jake moved the car up and paid. He passed the food to me, and as he received the change, I told him to put it in the center console.
"Whoa! Logan, there's a ton of cash in here."
"I keep change in there. When I go to the store or order something and pay with cash, I put the cash and coins in there."
"OK." He dropped the change in and closed the console's lid.
"Where's your favorite place around here?"
Jake stopped the car near the exit to the parking lot. "It's a place next to the beach. My sister takes the kids swimming there."
"Do you know how to get there?" I reached for my phone to pull up a map.
"Yeah. It's a few miles north of the interstate. I don't remember the name of the road, but I'm sure I can find it."
"Can you eat while driving? Or do you want to wait until we get there? Or I guess we can pull off under some trees. What's your preference?" I finished putting the straws in our drinks.
Jake immediately took a sip of his. "I'll eat it while driving."
I unwrapped his burrito and handed it to him after he pulled out onto the road. He drove with such confidence that I knew he knew where he was going. "Want me to open the orange juice?"
"Sure."
I held the juice in my left hand and my burrito in my right. My tea was between my legs. "The only drawback of this car is no cup holders."
"I will admit that it does drive nicely."
I sat back and took a bite of my breakfast. "What do you do for a living? Besides being a driver, I mean."
"I work in cybersecurity. I have a four day on, three days off schedule. I'm on call every other weekend. This is day two of my days off. What's your job?"
"I'm an engineer for the county. I examine the data for county infrastructure such as bridges and correlate it with load stress factors. It's rather dull work. My Ph.D. is in aerospace engineering." Why did I throw that last part in? He's going to think that I'm a braggart.
"An aerospace engineer? Wow, that's fascinating. My masters is in computer engineering."
"Then you're a pretty smart guy, aren't you?"
"Hey, I went on a date with you after just one look. I'm thinking that I made a pretty good choice here."
"Yeah," I agreed. "I'm feeling really lucky." I looked over at him again. He seemed better looking than he did when I first saw him. He reached for the orange juice.
I finished my burrito and took a sip of tea. I took his wrapper and mine and placed them in my little garbage sack. I kept thinking that a sexy man like Jake deserved to drive around in a car more manly than my trusty little Sunbird. I looked around as we passed by other vehicles and wondered which one would fit him the best.
When Jake finished the orange juice, I took the empty bottle from his hand. I let my hand stay in contact with his. His hands seemed strong and manly. They were the same size as mine, and I caressed the soft place between his thumb and index finger before taking the bottle away and discarding it.
As we came to the t-intersection that forced us to turn onto the road that paralleled the beach, Jacob asked me again about my job. "Why does someone who's an aerospace expert work analyzing bridge data?"
How much should I tell him at this point? I asked myself. "I did do some consulting work on wing design for Boeing at one point, and I still do occasionally. I could have taught at a university, and I've discussed doing some intro engineering courses at the community college. They're considering adding one to their physics department, but they haven't come to a decision. What about you? Have you ever thought about teaching?"
"I did teach a computer class while I worked on my master's, and I'm working for the college. I worked for a corporation when I was in the city, but I wanted to move back to a small town. My sister and I grew up about fifty miles down the coast, and this seemed like a good place to try to put down roots." He slowed the car. "Ah, here's the turn."
"And your sister must want you to put those roots down successfully."
"Yeah, she was rather insistent that I start dating. You can find your soulmate if you're not looking for your soulmate. At least that's what she says EVERY time she has a conversation with me." Jake parked the car in a space shaded by a tree that had been twisted by the constant winds here at the shoreline.
"So, this is your favorite place here in town?"
Jake pointed up. "It's actually at the top of this little ridge."
"Well, what are we waiting for? I'm taking my tea." I got out of the car. "I'm glad I'm wearing shorts. It looks like a bit of a hike."
"Too bad you not in running shorts," Jake mused.
"Why's that?" I asked.
"I'd make you lead. Of course side-by-side is just as good." He reached out his hand, and I took it. We walked hand in hand most of the way to the top.
"Where to now?" I asked.
"It's just up ahead, and closer to the beach."
We walked about another fifty feet when a large flat rock came into view. A beautiful view of the water also filled my vision. "Wow," I exclaimed. "I never knew this was here." A lizard scampered away as we approached the edge.
"I love to just sit here and watch and listen to the waves." As Jake sat near the edge, he pulled me down with him. He moved closer to me. Our hips and upper thighs were in contact. His arm extended across my back and he placed his hand on my waist.
I watched the water crash onto the shore, then I turned my head to see Jake examining the horizon. I placed my hand on his leg. He turned his head toward mine, and we kissed. It was a soft gentle kiss. Even so, my heart began to beat faster. I twisted slightly and place my other hand on his chest. I felt his tongue brush against my upper lip, and I opened my mouth to let him in.
I closed my eyes and felt the warmth of the mid-morning sun warm my face as my tongue met his and wrestled behind my upper teeth. I didn't remember ever feeling this warm inside.
Jake broke the kiss and pointed out to the sea. "Look at that. It looks like an old sailing vessel."
I strained to see what looked like a large boat with two large masts and several sails. We watched it until it disappeared. We continued to stare at the place where it disappeared from view.
"Want to go play in the water?" Jake jumped up and held his hand for me to grab.
"We don't have suits," I reminded him.
"I won't tell if you don't," he laughed and pulled me to my feet.
We started back down. I'd never gone swimming without any clothes. What bothered me more is that if we were both naked, I knew that I'd have a hardon. Jake was just too sexy for me not to pop one right off the bat. "What if we leave our shorts in the car and swim in our underwear? We can change out of the underwear and back into the shorts after we're done."
"Oh," Jake said with an air of surprise. "Did you think I meant we were going to go skinny-dipping?"
I started to stammer, and he began laughing. "I did want us to go skinny-dipping, but I see you're worried about getting caught." Just then, two cars pulled into the parking lot, and several kids jumped out and ran screaming for the beach.
Jake let out a big sigh. "So much for having you do me on the beach."
"With all that sand? And no lube?"
Jake burst out laughing. "Not exactly the image I had in mind for the first time."
"Besides," I said to him seriously, "we're not allowed to fuck until the third date. I read it somewhere once."
"The third date? Where'd you read that? I'm pretty sure we can on the first date."
"If you do it on the first day, then it's just a hook-up or you're both sluts. Now open the door." I did a fake smile.
We got back in the car.
"The third date?" Jake repeated.
I moved so that I was facing him, and I kissed him. I ran my hand over his crotch. I felt his dick stir. I whispered in his ear, "Of course, you're allowed to think about me while you jerk off." I sat back in my seat and put my belt on. "What do you want to do now?"
Jake glared at me.
"Other than that," I said.
"I know. It's just that I really like you."
"I'm feeling the same way," I told him. "Jake, I just don't want to go too fast, but I want you to know that I'm feeling things I've never felt before."
"Logan, just so you know, I don't want you to do anything that you're not ready to do. Don't give in to me because I want it. I want us both to want it."
"I knew you'd feel that way. I could tell that's the kind of man you are."
I saw Jake smile. "Tell me," he said, "are you into baseball?"
"Depends on who's playing, I guess. Is there a game this afternoon?"
"Yeah. I usually go to the sports bar to watch it. Alicia doesn't have ESPN."
"Tell you what. I've got cable, and I can add ESPN and it'll show up almost immediately. Drop me off at my place. You go back to yours and get a change of clothes. I'll take you to my favorite place for dinner, and we have to wear long pants. Bring some clothes for tomorrow as well, you know, in case we stay out too late."
Jake started the car. "What about lunch? Should I pick something up?"
"If you want. If you don't, we can order some pizza. If you want to have a beer during the game, you'll need to bring that. I don't have any at home."
"Sounds like a great afternoon and evening."
"And you know what, Jake?" I looked over at him with a grin. "Because you'll be dropping me off and then coming back, this afternoon will be our second date."
"Yeah?"
"Why don't you bring some extra underwear? Just in case you mess up the ones you're wearing."
