“So, what’s the plan then?” Julia asked, reaching out and taking a handful of the popcorn they were all sharing. Well, minus Celia, but she sat and pretended to eat anyway to feel included. It was later in the evening now, just after six. Nathan had needed a nap and time to breathe and the girls had let him.

“I honestly don’t know…not die.” Nathan shrugged. “I’ll never admit this, but I do feel a touch safer seeing as Marshall and that Vampire in the coffin want me alive.”

“Yeah, I’d never admit that.” Julia laughs. “Hey,” she says with a sudden look of concern twisting her face. “what about your parents? Have you talked to them about any of this?”

“No, I don’t want to worry them.” Nathan shook his head.

“Well…have they been attacked and maybe not told you?” She suggests.

“Shit, I didn’t think of that.” Nathan takes a bite of the popcorn, the idea becoming a focus now. “I should go over there.”

“Didn’t Marshall instruct you to stay here until that Vampire lady comes to say hi or something.” Celia reminds.

“Yeah, but I’m not going to listen to him.” Nathan stands up, “Jack I know you can hear me, start the car.” Nathan didn’t want Jack to be here, but Marshall had instructed Jack to act as security until he could have a roster of Vampire security guards to rotate. Nathan walks over to the shelves with his grimoire. “Julia can you get some ingredients gathered for a protection potion. I want to ward their house like ours is.” She nodded as he started flipping the pages, looking for the spell.

“You sure Jack heard you?” Julia says as she grabs some of the special salt they only used in spell crafting.

“I’m sure he did.” Nathan walks to the door. “Ready?” Jack always heard Nathan.

“Let’s go.” And they head out the door.

*****

“Hi mom, where’s dad?” Nathan embraces his mother. She must’ve been in her studio she was covered in paint; her brown hair was in a mess of a bun at the back of her head nearly falling apart. She squeezes her son. Julia stood behind Nathan on the porch while Jack was waiting in the car. Nathan had thought it best for Jack to wait there for several reasons.

“Oh, he was on a call in his office I think. I don’t remember.” She laughed pulling away. “I’m getting some pieces ready for a gallery next week so sorry for the paint.” She apologized. Claudia Moreau was an Art Specialist at the Celeste Mansion in Old Town. She wore a lot of hats, so that’s what she called herself, a Specialist. She was also an artist herself and often got to put her own pieces in shows and galleries. Henry ran the family business, sort of. He sat on the board for it anyway, but had a hands-on role. The family business worked in investments and building equity in businesses they invested in. Sometimes they participated in venture capital, though not as often.

“It’s so late though.” Nathan commented as he and Julia walked inside.

“Well, you know him.” Claudia waved him off. “Julia! So good to see you dear. I love the haircut.” She commented, hugging her. Julia had recently cut her hair shoulder length and it did look good.

“Thanks Claudia.”

“Now, why are you two here?” Nathan’s mother asked, the group walking farther into the house towards the living room.

“Well, we’re here just to check the wards and add another one.” Nathan said knowing she’d ask why and he’d have to explain more than he wanted to. She did of course ask why. “Well… I seem to have pissed off someone very wealthy and now he’s paying anyone who can bring me to him.” Nathan bent the truth a tad.

“Oh Nathan, what have you done.” Claudia sighed. “You have got to be more careful. I thought I taught you that.”

“You did mom, but you know I can’t help it.” Nathan began weaving his lie. “It must’ve been a Demon or something I vanquished. He probably had a friend or lover or something.” Nathan lied. He hadn’t faced any Demons in a while. Demons were actually pretty uncommon. Especially in Northbridge, too many Witches. “You know, doing my mystical duty, protecting the innocent and all that – it sometimes earns you some enemies.” He laughed it off.

“Yeah, but you always had a knack for going out and finding the trouble. Your father and I never dealt with half of the problems you and your generation deal with.” Claudia laughed, taking a seat. “Alright, well, what do we do? What do we need?” She asked.

“We’ve brought everything we need actually.” Julia piped in. “It’s the same protection spells we use for the apartment. Just to cloak the house from locator spells and ward off anyone who means ill will.” She started pulling ingredients out.

“Yeah, anyone who comes near with bad intentions will experience confusion, disorientation, and then forget why they even came here in the first place. They’ll leave and not remember where the place is if they even remember they were here to begin with.” Nathan explained.

“Nice, better than the basic ones we’ve got on the house.” Claudia laughed. “Should I get your father, do we need him?”

“We shouldn’t, but we will need to scatter this mixture around the house. At the four corners of the foundation.” Julia starts evening out four vials of the powder from the bigger jar she’d pre-mixed.

“But there’s only three of us, so we do need your father.”

“No…Jack…is outside in the car.” Nathan explained.

“Oh!” Claudia raised her brows in surprise. “So you two are…”

“No, uhm, he’s just hanging around to help until I can figure out how to deal with this issue. But he can help with the spell at least.” Nathan told his mother. He didn’t want to tell his mother everything. She’d heard enough of his relationship woes growing up.

“Oh, well he doesn’t have to wait outside. He knows he’s-”

“I didn’t invite him in because it’s not my house and I’m also trying to establish boundaries in our breakup.” Jack had been disinvited from the Moreau house upon the breakup.

“Clearly it’s working.” Julia laughed under her breath. He elbowed her. “Ow!”

“Nathan.” Claudia scolded her son.

“Sorry.” He apologized. Julia just rolled her eyes.

“Ready.” She handed Claudia a bottle and Nathan another.

“Okay,” Nathan stood. “let’s-” He turned to the door; he felt something wrong. Jack was hurt. “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.” Nathan took off towards Jack.

“Nathan!” His mother and Julia both exclaimed following him.

Nathan burst out the front door and into the front yard. Jack was fighting off a Werewolf, another shadow of a creature was crumpled on the ground nearby. The Werewolf was on top of Jack snapping his large jaws at him.

“Jack! Watch out!” Nathan threw his hand out and the Werewolf went flying into a tree in the yard. It smacked into the wood with a satisfying crunch; either from the wood or bones, Nathan couldn’t tell. Werewolf bites or scratches could be deadly to a Vampire.

“Thanks.”

“Are you okay?” Nathan ran to Jack and helped him up. Claudia and Julia tried to run to aid him as well, but Nathan told them to stay back. “Did it-”

“No, I’m fine, the scratch is from the pavement when he ripped me out of my car.” He winced. Nathan heard a hiss and looked at the second creature. “It’s another Basume.” He said as the creature started to slowly make its way towards them.

“You killed my brother.” The Basume said in a hissing voice. Nathan narrowed his eyes at the beast.

“Yeah, well he tried to kill me first.” Nathan summoned a fireball. “Leave while you still have the chance, or you’ll be joining him in a grave.” Nathan threatened, stepping forward. The wind kicked and Nathan summoned a thunders boom for emphasis.

The Werewolf roared in response and dashed forward.

“Oh no you don’t!” Claudia had run up to defend her son, she threw her hand up and the Werewolf hit an invisible wall. “This is my home and my son. You are outmatched here.” Her voice was calm and even but held the power it needed. Nathan let his fireball sizzle into nothing.

“Come with us now, or we’ll burn your parents’ house to the ground.” The Basume hissed. “He want’s you alive.” A forked tongue slithered out and spread across its’ thin reptilian lips.

“You’ll try.” Nathan grabbed his mother’s hand; Julia joined them and power swelled around them. The weather started to change. Dark clouds covered the moon, thunder boomed and lighting flashed in the sky. “If he wants me, he’ll have to come get me himself.” Nathan told the Shapechangers.

“I’d leave if I were you.” Jack tried to warn them, but the two creatures were stupid. The Werewolf dashed away to fake like it was retreating while the Basume lunged forward to distract them. The Basume was thrown across the yard by the three Witches power while the Werewolf snuck up behind them, with the storm they had summoned the Witches were unable to hear it. It tried to claw at Claudia, but Jack was fast and he heard and saw the beast coming. He used his superior speed to grab her and take her out of the Werewolf’s path.

The Werewolf fell past Nathan and rolled on the ground, assuming a crouched pose. Readying itself to pounce once again. Nathan felt a fury boil in him when he realized what the beast had tried to do. The Basume took the distraction as an opportunity to lunge again and Julia threw a fireball at the creature and then engaged in battle with it. She dropped Nathan’s hand and stepped forward lobbing another fireball at the overgrown lizard.

The Werewolf growled and leapt towards Nathan, but the Witch raised a hand and held the creature in the air.

“You tried to kill my mother!” Nathan felt more power than he ever had swell inside him as he forced the Werewolf down to the ground. It landed with a thud, impacting the earth beneath it. It’s bones crunching as it howled in pain. Nathan had used magick to electrocute before, but it required him to touch the victim, but this time he felt it crackle across his palm and between his fingers. “You son of a bitch!” Nathan wailed as he threw his hands forward, the electricity flying from his fingers and hitting the Werewolf. It howled again, louder this time, in pain. The creature convulsed from the shocks.

Nathan threw another bolt and another. The Werewolf stopped howling – stopped moving, only the aftershocks causing the body to twitch and writhe. The smell of burnt skin and singed fur rising with the smoke off of its’ body. The Werewolf dead, it shifted back to its’ naked human form. Nathan almost threw another bolt but stopped when he saw the body on the ground in front of him. He then felt weak, the adrenaline being overpowered by the extreme use of magick.

Nathan looked over and saw Julia dodge a swipe of the Basumes claws, flicking a wrist in the process and sending the reptile to the ground. She flared her hand out and whispered a spell then closed her fist.

“Die fucker!” Julia exclaimed as she used telekinesis to snap the Basume’s neck, winning her battle. The second creature twitched then also took its’ human form, its’ body limp from death. She turned to Nathan smiling and he gave a thumbs up, mumbling something. She gave him a look of concern, taking a step towards him as she said something he couldn’t hear.

Nathan turned towards his mother and Jack on the porch, his father had run outside now drawn by all the attention.

“What the fuck is going on out here?!” Henry exclaimed.

“Mommy…Daddy…” Nathan felt weak, he reached up and felt blood dripping from his nose. “Oh!” He said in calm shock.

“Nathan!” Jack rushed in a Vampiric blink to his side to catch him as he began to fall. He saw everyone else crowd around as his vision started to blur in and out.

“Jack…” He said weakly, lifting his hand to grab Jacks’ face before he passed out.

*****

“Jack…” Nathan whispered. “Jack…” He whispered again. “Wake up.” He whispered as his hand traveled down Jacks body.

“Good morning.” Jack croaked in his morning voice as Nathans hand found his prize. “Someone’s feeling frisky this morning I see.” He grinned and stretched. “Ah!” He gasped.

“And it looks like I’m not the only one…” Nathan said seductively as he kissed Jacks neck, making a trail downwards.

“Mmm, I wouldn’t deny it.” Jack nodded, his hand resting behind his head. He rested his other one on Nathans’ head as he reached its’ destination underneath the sheets. Jack sucked in a gasp as Nathan began his work. He bobbed up and down, tasting the savory flavor of his flesh. “Oh, right – just like that. Don’t stop.” Jack moaned as Nathan slipped his hand down to take care of himself.

Nathan swirled Jack in his mouth tasting the precum and feeling him tense as he tried to hold himself back from orgasm. “Cum for me…” Nathan moaned in a breath before going back to work.

“I’m close, I’m going to.” Jack arched into Nathans mouth feeling the heat rise. “Ahh!” He was closer, his toes were curling, fingers gripping the sheets around him as Nathan pulled forth the pearly liquid. “Nathan! I’m – oh right – like that! Nathan!” He moaned as his body rolled with ecstasy, spewing into Nathans mouth. Nathan pushed further down, taking in every drop creating a perfect seal that wouldn’t allow any of the precious liquid to escape.

“Mmm,” Nathan pulled up and threw the sheets back, licking his lips in satisfaction. “turn over.” He commanded and Jack obeyed. “You ready for this?” Nathan said as he pulled Jacks cheeks apart, exposing his hole.

“Mmm, you bet I am.” Jack nodded, spreading his legs farther to allow Nathan more room. Nathan dropped a large glob of saliva onto Jacks ready and willing hole. Jack didn’t bottom often, but he loved when Nathan did it. Jack was craving the feeling of being filled with Nathans length.

Nathan used a little magickal help to loosen Jack up then lined himself up with Jacks winking pucker. “Fuck…” Nathan moaned as he inched in, the head slid inside the entrance with ease and Jack shuddered from the pleasure, Nathan’s cockhead stretching him open. Nathan inched in then pulled back out before inching back in again. He teased like this, making Jack moan and tense up waiting for, anticipating, the sensation of all of Nathan filling his body.

“Oh god Nate, don’t do this to me. Fuck me please.” Jack begged Nathan to turn his dom side on so Nathan did. He pulled out until only his head was inside, then he smacked Jacks asscheek one good time, leaving a red handprint on the fleshy globe. “Ah!” He yipped as Nathan thrust forward sinking to the base in one motion.

“Oh fuck!” Nathan groaned, feeling the tightness grip him. It felt so warm and soft. “Fuck.” Nathan repeated as he pulled back and thrust again. Both men moaning as Nathan picked his speed up.

“Nathan!” Jack moaned, biting the pillow to muffle it as to not wake Julia. “Nate…” He moaned again as Nathan smacked his ass once more, thrusting into him, getting closer and closer to filling him with his own cum. “Nate…” He groaned as he felt Nathans body on top of him, the warmth radiate off of his body. “Nate…” Jack shuddered as he felt Nathans cock pulsate, throb, getting closer and closer to climax. His balls smacking against his own as he drilled into him from above.

*****

“Nate…” Jack whispered, shaking him. He could hear his heartbeat start to rise and could see his erection forming in his pants. “Wake up Nathan.” He prodded him.

“Jack…” He said in almost a moan as he came too. His eyes opened and he noticed where he was. His old bedroom. He hadn’t been hear in years. “Jack what?” He asked as he sat up, his body sore still. His memory started to return. “How long-” Nathan propped himself up on his elbows.

“About an hour and everyone is fine.” Jack answered before Nathan asked the question. “Your parents, Julia and I finished the wards, then your dad called his buddy on the police force to come collect the bodies and cover up the ‘supernatural element’ were his exact words.” He chuckled.

“Did I…” More of the memory started to return and his palms started to tingle.

“Yeah, you mother was terrified. Your father was proud. Looked like mine that time I hit a homerun for the third time in one game back in high school.” Jack grinned, turning Nathans hand over and tracing his finger in a circle across his palm. He looked up at Jack and for a moment he didn’t remember he was angry with him – hurt. But now, as he looked at the man he loved his face shifted. Jack could tell Nathans’ mood shifted so he continued with a professional tone.

“I’ve never done that before.” Throwing lightning was a more advanced power, and a rare one. Nathan was impressed with himself. Jack was too, everyone was.

“Yeah Julia said something about Witches powers blooming in times of great need or stress.” Jack repeated the words Julia had said to calm Claudia down. She had been in near hysterics thinking her son was going to die of overuse. “I’ve never seen your mother so red.”

“I can imagine.” Nathan laughed shifting in bed, sitting up.

“So…” Jack said when an awkward silence settled over them. “dreaming about me?” He cocked a brow.

“What!” He scoffed. “No. Why would you think that?” Jack looked at him with a knowing look then glanced down south and pointed with his eyes. “Shut up.” Nathan adjusted himself to make it less obvious. “You can’t tell Marshall about tonight.” Nathan said recalling the order not to leave his apartment.

“He already knows. You should hear the voicemail I got.” Jack rolled his eyes. “Marshall has his own eyes and ears in the police force. He’s pissed.”

“Fuck him, he can’t control my life.” Nathan got out of the bed and stretched.

“He just wants you safe. He’s got a ‘vested interest in your safety’ because of his sire.” Jack reminded Nathan.

“Yeah, well I’ve faced things like this before.” Nathan left the room and Jack followed; out in the hall he could see the flashing emergency lights.

“Really? You’ve faced a thousand-year-old First-born Vampire who wants you dead for some unknown reason?” Jack prodded as they descended the stairs.

“He wants me alive now.” Nathan said with a sarcastic grin walking outside.

“Oh, my apologies.” Jack chuckled.

“Nathan.” Henry and Claudia rushed to their son, taking him in a hug. “You’re alright.”

“Yes dad, I’m fine.” He assured his father.

“I can’ believe-”

“I know, it was awesome.” Julia grinned, joining them. “I just got done with some fortifications, you guys should be all good to go.”

“Thank you,” Claudia said. “and it wasn’t ‘awesome’ it was terrifying. He could’ve died.” She hugged her son once more.

“It would have been terrifying if I did die.” Nathan said with a crushed windpipe, his mother’s grasp was strong.

“Still.” Claudia looked over her son.

“I gave him my blood, he’ll be fine.” Jack said. That (probably) explained the (probably) dream he was having about Jack (PROBABLY!).

“Thank you son.” Henry reached out and shook Jacks hand. He’d always liked Jack and hoped he and Nathan would get married. Pressed Nathan about it often.

“Excuse me, Mr. Moreau.” A police officer came up and pulled Henry away.

“Excuse me, I should go finish up with this.” And with that, he stepped away with the officer.

Nathan and the rest went inside to say their goodbyes while he assured his mother he had everything under control, Jack waited outside. Claudia hounded Nathan with questions, Nathan dodged some of them or repeated his lies from earlier.

“I’ll be right back, wait here a second.” Claudia went off to the basement where the Altar room had been situated. When she returned she had the family Grimoire. “Here, take this.” It was old, passed down generation to generation. It was bound in wood, etched with the markings of the elements on the corners with a pentacle in the center. The Moreau family crest carved into the back with their name on the spine in Theban Script. Its’ pages yellowed with age, but protected by magick to prevent any real damage.

“But…” Nathan protested. Family Grimoires were usually passed down to the eldest after they had their own first-born child.

“It’ll be yours someday anyway.” She smiled, sending a quick glance to Jack in the doorway. “Take it on loan for now, it has the power of your ancestors – all of their knowledge. Maybe it’ll help you.” She gave him another hug.

“Thank you mom.” Nathan said softly, returning the hug. “I’ve got to get home, but I love you and I’ll check in soon.” He pulled away and she kissed him on the cheek.

“You can handle this, whatever it is. I have faith in you.” Claudia wiped a tear away before it fell. “But I don’t like it. Make sure it doesn’t happen again. I don’t want to have to deal with another dead Basume.” She laughed.

“Me neither.” Nathan laughed back.

“By Mrs. Moreau.” Julia gave her a light hug and they headed out to meet Jack on the porch.

“Nice book – Ahh!” Jack reached out to tap it and it singed his skin. He sucked his finger, the heat radiating up his hand.

“Ha!” Nathan chuckled as they all headed to Jacks car. “It’s enchanted, only Witches can touch it.”

“Ow.” Jack repeated while Julia and Nathan laughed. They all piled into the car and Jack drove away, Nathan waved goodbye to his father as they left the driveway.

*****

It had been a quiet few days, Nathan hadn’t left the apartment. It was midmorning and he’d just eaten some microwave waffles. He needed to go grocery shopping. He was lucky he didn’t need to worry about work. It was owned by his family’s business so he was cashing in on that nepotism to take some time off. He had spent the time looking over the Grimoire, seeing if there was anything that could help him. Surprisingly there was. Sort of.

“The Firstborn are the first generation and most powerful of the Vampires – next to the Progenitor. Legend speaks of there being many of them, though some say it is as few as four or six. My great aunt swears she has had a run in with one who called herself Astrid, but no one in the family believes her. Most Witches who have encountered them tell story of their unmatched strength and speed, and their much more advanced hypnotism or compulsion. Able to even read minds it seems. Though no one knows if their power can effect Witches. It stands to reason they can’t since Vampires compulsion is useless on a Witch.” He read the passage out loud again. It was an entry from his ancestor from about four hundred years ago.

“Hm.” He huffed in frustration. There wasn’t much else on Vampires or the Firstborn in the book, just spells on protection, to call an ancestor, vanquish a Demon – with a few pages dedicated to specific Demons his ancestors had encountered – and one spell on how to bring a teddy bear to life. It was in his mother’s handwriting with a note that stated how the spell could be used to help children find comfort or have someone to talk to when lonely or going through a hard time. His mother had brought his teddy bear to life when he was younger when his grandmother had died.

“Anything in there on ghosts?” Celia peered over, she was levitating above Nathan who was sitting on the couch, book propped on his knees while he read.

“Yes actually! I meant to tell you.” He flipped through. “It says here…” He skimmed down to the paragraph. “When someone dies in a violent way it can sometimes cause them to forget their lives or effect their memories in ways that could prevent them from moving on and finding peace. Binding their soul to the mortal coil instead of them moving onto limbo or The Seam.” Nathan read her the passage. The Seam was a limbo between the mortal coil and the Afterlife. It was mainly for supernatural beings, but some humans did end up there too.

“That’s it?” She asked as she landed in front of Nathan. He nodded. “We already knew that.” She sighed.

“There’s more.” Nathan frowned.

“What is it?”

“Well, it goes on to say that if a ghost doesn’t move on, they could forget more and more until they become a Wayward or even worse, a Poltergeist.” Nathan explained. “So any idea what your unfinished business is?”

“No clue.” She frowned and sunk into the couch…literally. She reappeared in front of Nathan. “You should go ask my parents more about me.” She offers.

“And what would I say. I want to help you but I can’t just show up at a parents house and dig up the pain of their dead daughter.” Nathan explained.

“Maybe you could find a way to bring me with you. There are spells that can bind a ghost to an object right? You could take me to them and I could talk to them. Maybe that’s my unfinished business. Maybe I just need to say goodbye to them.” She pleaded.

“Actually…” Celia had a point, perhaps Nathan could bring her. Perform some kind of séance maybe with a Ouija board. Perhaps this was it, perhaps this was how he helped his –

Knock, knock, knock. Nathan was snapped out of his thought by a knock at the door.

“One minute.” Celia nodded and Nathan stood, walking to the door. “Hello.” He greeted the person on the other side. It was a Vampire; Nathan could feel it. Their eyes were deep and hungry, he had thin hair and sharp cheek bones. He almost looked stereotypical. “Can I help you?” Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Your attendance is requested.” He held out his hand. In it was a piece of meticulously decorated cardstock. “She’s ready to meet you.” Nathan took the invitation and then the Vampire smiled, tilted his head and whisked away with his speed. Nathan closed the door.

“What’s it say?” Celia asked.

The side facing him was embossed with “Westfall Country Club” in gold calligraphy. Nathan turned it over and saw a handwritten note:

   Nathan,

Please join me for lunch this afternoon. My treat.

One P.M. sharp. Don’t be late.

I can’t wait to meet you…

-Briga

“Looks like I have a date.” He told Celia after reading her the note.

“Are you going?” She asked him.

“I don’t think I actually have a choice.” Nathan sat back down on the couch.

“Gonna call Julia for backup?”

“I don’t want her to miss work.” Nathan knew he shouldn’t go alone. He just didn’t like that his only other option was Jack. He rolled his eyes and sighed.

“Gonna call him?”

“Who else.” Nathan groaned in response. “Fuck.” He sighed again.
