Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel backs same-sex marriage and said last week that he was in favour of recognizing "marriage between people without any restrictions." Díaz-Canel took over as president in April. This comes as Cuba is in the process of updating its constitution, which currently defines marriage as between "a man and a woman."
The draft of the proposed constitution needs approval in a national referendum scheduled for February 2019. Afterwards, the National Assembly and President Miguel Díaz-Canel would need to approve it for the constitution to pass into law.
